Paul R. Blakemore (Principal Investigator) [2001 – present]
![]() |
Paul Blakemore was born in London in 1973. He obtained BS degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Southampton in 1995 and then began graduate studies with Philip Kocienski, at the same institution, in the area of sulfone-based olefination methods. After relocating with the Kocienski Group to the University of Glasgow in 1996, Paul discovered that trans alkenes can be made from PT-sulfones with excellent levels of stereocontrol. This process, now known as the Julia-Kocienski olefination, has become a very popular synthetic method. A rewarding period of post-doctoral research then followed with Jim White at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. During this time (1999-2001), Paul concluded group efforts which culminated in total syntheses of several complex molecules including the pyrrolizidine alkaloid loline and the macrolide polycavernoside A. |
Paul began his independent academic career as a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Leeds (UK) just after 9/11 and returned to the US a few years later to join the faculty at OSU in 2005. Paul's research is focused on new methods and concepts for the absolute control of molecular constitution and stereochemistry and he also maintains a healthy interest in target directed synthesis. From 2021 to 2023, Paul worked as a Program Director for the Chemical Synthesis and Chemical Catalysis programs of the Division of Chemistry at the National Science Foundation in metropolitan Washington, D.C. Outside of chemistry, Paul is a keen guitar enthusiast and he enjoys baseball (#ITFDB), modern literature, and exploring the USA and beyond. [TOP] |

After her MS work, Prasanna worked as a research intern for 6 months at Osmania University, under the guidance of Dr. Muralidhar Reddy, on the synthesis of indole-methane compounds and 3-substituted lawsones. Prasanna then moved to the CSIR-Indian Institute Of Chemical Technology as a Project Associate and worked under the guidance of Dr .B.V. Subba Reddy; here, her work focussed on the synthesis of biaryl intermediates for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
|
Prasanna joined the graduate program at Oregon State University in Fall 2024 where she conducts PhD-track thesis research work in the Blakemore Research Group. Prasanna's work is currently focused on the total synthesis and investigation of the chalaniline family of natural product molecules. |

Hunter Simpson (Grad. Res. Assistant) [2024 – present]
![]() |
Hunter Simpson was born in Burlington, Vermont in 2000, and grew up in Eugene, Oregon. He attended Portland State University where he received his BS in chemistry in 2023. After he earned his Bachelor's, he briefly stayed at Portland State where he worked as a lab tech in the laboratory of Prof. David Stuart, working on method development in aryne chemistry. The focus of this work was to generate arynes using diaryliodonium or thianthrenium salts which obviate the use of strong bases. Hunter then enrolled in the PhD track chemistry program at Oregon State University in the Fall of 2024, and officially joined the Blakemore Research Group at the start of 2025. Hunter’s current research focuses on using the carbenoid eliminative cross coupling paradigm (CEXc) to synthesize non-conjugated alkenes. |
