Former BRG Member:

Adam L. Barsamian (Graduate Research Assistant) [2008-2015]

Adam was born (1982) and raised in Wisconsin. He received his B. Sc. degree in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and graduated with honors in 2008. In addition to his studies in Chemistry, he minored in Spanish and studied abroad at the Universidad de Guadalajara, Mexico (2004). His undergraduate research and senior thesis were carried out under the guidance of Prof. Lori Allen and concerned trace metal analysis techniques and environmental application. Adam's favorite undergraduate research highlight was a young scientist centered local environmental cleanup effort led by Prof. Lori Allen that involved the phytoremediation of lead and chromium at Mary Ellen Helgren Johnson Park in Racine, Wisconsin (2006-2007). After receiving his B. Sc. degree, he progressed to graduate school within the Dept. of Chemistry at Oregon State University where conducted PhD track study within the Blakemore Research Group. Adam’s PhD research was varied and focused on several projects, including: the generation and configurational stability of metalated S,O-acetals; ligand mediated stereoinductive reagent controlled homologation (i-StReCH) of boronic esters with configurationally labile silyl group bearing lithiated carbenoids; and, generation of enantioenriched organometallic reagents by asymmetric halogen-metal exchange (AHME). In addition, he collaborated with the research group of Prof. Jennifer Field and designed and executed regioselective syntheses of isotopically labeled standards for application in the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative. Outside of the laboratory he enjoys time with family and friends, the fine arts, running, and outdoor activities.
