Former BRG Member:

Luce Mattio (Visiting Scholar) [2019-2020]

Luce Mattio was born in Milan, Italy. Although she focused on humanistic studies during high school, since she was a child she has been always fascinated by the scientist life. Therefore, she decided to study medicinal chemistry and she received her master degree at the University of Milan in September 2017, with a thesis focused on the chemical synthesis of tetramic acid analogues of leopolic acid, a natural compound endowed with antifungal activity. In October 2017, she enrolled in the PhD program in “Food Systems” in Milan and her research project deals with the identification, synthesis, and biological studies of polyphenols from food matrix or waste by-products. In particular, she focuses on the synthesis and biological evaluation of dimers of resveratrol and other stilbene derivatives and their structural modification for structure-activity-relationship studies. In April 2019, she joined the Stevens Research Group as visiting scholar at Oregon State University. During her exchange period, she studied analytical and biological approaches to identify bioactive molecules from different natural extracts and in the Blakemore Research Group she investigated the derivatization of xanthohumol, a bioactive prenylated flavonoid from hops.
