Announcements:
- The midterm is on Friday May 27 and covers chapter 9 and 12.
Specifically, you only need to know the material we discussed in class.
This includes most of 9.2-9.8 and of 12.2-12.6, although some material was skipped, while other material was added in class. Students are responsible to know what was covered in class. The exam is closed book (no formula sheets, texts or other sources can be consulted), and calculators are not allowed. Please bring your own paper and pen/pencils.
- Correction: I made a silly mistake at the end of class today (Fr May 20). The last linearization cannot have imaginary eigenvalues.
Remember the formula for the eigenvalues: [-k.gamma.S0 +/- sqrt{(k.gamma.S0-2D)^2}]/2. But the square root
of a non-negative number is always non-negative, and never imaginary. Therefore the eigenvalues are always real, and you should ignore what I called the 2nd subcase.
- In addition to the review on Thursday June 16 (see next item) there will be an additional office hour following the class of Wednesday June 15 at 3:15pm.
- There will be a review of the final on Thursday June 16. I will not lecture that day. The purpose of the review is that you ask me any questions about the material you may have, including questions on HW (both weekly and graded HW), any other questions on problems in the text, or the material you are expected to know for the final exam.
- The final is on Friday June 17 and covers chapter 8 and 11.
Specifically, you only need to know the material we discussed in class.
This includes most of 8.2-8.8 and of 11.2-11.6, although some material was skipped, while other material was added in class, like the discussion of the Gamma function and Bessel equation.
Students are responsible to know what was covered in class. The exam is closed book (no formula sheets, texts or other sources can be consulted), and calculators are not allowed. Please bring your own paper and pen/pencils.
- Correction: I think I made another silly mistake at the beginning of class today (Wed June 15). It concerns problem 11.5 (14) which is
a problem in HW4. I said to take r(x)=x, q(x)=0 and p(x)=-1/x. But then the problem is not a REGULAR Sturm-Liouville problem since that requires that p(x)>0 on the interval
[1,e], and this choice clearly isn't. Instead you should take r(x)=x, q(x)=-1/x and p(x)=1/x. I realize you may not read this message before turning in your HW. Therefore,
you may turn in this problem on Fr June 17 (the other 4 problems are still due on Th June 16), and I won't grade the solution of this problem that you turn in on Th June 16.
