Week Nine Web

Electrons bound to an atom must conserve orbital angular momentum.  The individual angular momenta of the electrons can then be vector summed, with a set of specific rules, to get the atoms total angular momentum.

The binding of atoms into a molecule is a result of electron interactions.   The overlapping of the wavefunctions is what is typically referred to as "sharing" an electron.  The atomic states that were described before can now be thought of as molecular energy states.

Angular Momentum Conservation

View this simple applet to get a visual on the relative speed to radius ratio of a object that must conserve angular momentum.

         1.  What happens to the speed of angular rotation when you reduce the radius?  Why does this happen, from the equation?

Kepler's second Law states: During equal time interval, the radius vector from the sun to a planet sweeps out equal area.  View this applet and visualize this equal area law.

Probability Game

Looking ahead to next week and the subject of statistics this is a Monty Hall game that illustrates probability to choose one out of three.  In this game you choose one box out of three in hopes to win a car.  After you have choose a box there are two boxes left.  Pressing on the button open will open the box that is left that doesn't have a car in it.  At this point you can keep the box you choose or switch with the one left unopened.  Intuition is that at this point you have a fifty percent chance of winning.  Play a few time and see if you win 50% of the time.

        1. What is the probability for each case?
