- What does it mean to be a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) ?
- It is rare in our program to appoint first year graduate students as GRAs. However, GRA stipends may be available for the summer and future years.

I have directed student projects in
applied and computational mathematical modeling, and I am grateful for
the shared experiences. They have gone on to work in academia, labs,
government, and industry; see student
accomplishments. They do research, attend meetings, give
presentations, learn current and new technologies, and continue
professional development. They choose their topics, or we do it
together. If they work on one of my sponsored projects, we carve a
piece that lets them contribute and grow. Not everyone is a specialist
on day one: maybe only after
ten thousand hours.

My style is to work hard ("all you can do is work"), deal with the challenges, invest in your professional career, enjoy the success, and pay it forward. If this is also your style, great.

I like both the disciplinary and the interdisciplinary work, and I like to ignore the disciplinary or other boundaries and differences. I serve as graduate faculty (Graduate Chair 2015-19) in Mathematics and in the Water Resources Graduate Program at OSU, and have served on over 20 graduate committees in mathematics and engineering. I am also a mentor in the National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences, and serve on Executive Committee of the Pacific Math Alliance.
