Schedule:
Two Midterm Exams will be scheduled on in class on Monday, April 26 and Monday, May 18. The Final Exam will be during the normal slot for this class period: Tuesday, June 9 from 6-8 p.m.
Coverage and content
Exam 1: 100 points
Chapters 8, 9 and 17. Alcohols, Ethers, Epoxides and Ketones. IR/NMR, general properties and structure, reaction chemistry, most notably nucleophilic substitution (alcohols, ethers), ring opening (epoxides), nucleophilic addition (ketones--reversible and irreversible), and oxidation (of alcohols) and reduction (of ketones. Synthesis of each functional group.
I will give you a copy of Table 10.2 (NMR chemical shifts) and Table 11.4 (typical functional group IR frequencies) for use in spectroscopy problems.

Chapters 19, 20, 21. Amines, Carboxylic Acids and their derivatives. IR/NMR, general properties and structure, particularly acid/base chemistry and a quantitative understanding of pKa. Reaction chemistry, prticularly alkylation of amines, and nucleophilic acyl substitution in carboxylic acids and their derivatives. Synthesis of each functional group.

Final Exam: 200 points
I have no precise model for the final exam, as in the past few times I have taught the course we have used the ACS Organic Exam. However, the exams below focus on the material covered in Chapters 18 and 23.
