Only the Single Variable book (Chapters 1-11) is needed for MTH 251-253. Buy the full version (Chapters 1-20) if you plan to take MTH 254 and/or MTH 255.

Prerequisite:   MTH 112: Elementary Functions

It is difficult to do well in this course unless you are fluent in basic algebra and trigonometry. If you are unsure whether you have sufficient background, talk to the instructor.

Course Structure:

The approach to calculus used in this course emphasizes conceptual understanding involving multiple representations, not just algebraic manipulation.

Regular class attendance is strongly encouraged.

Homework:

You should try the Exercises at the end of each section of the text as soon as possible after the corresponding lecture. These problems will not be graded, and should not be turned in. A few problems will be assigned each week; bring your written solutions to the next recitation, where they will count towards your overall lab grade. Get help immediately if you have trouble.

Labs:

Most weeks during the recitation period, there will be a small group activity, which will then need to be written up individually and turned in promptly, usually the next day.

Calculators:

Graphing calculators may be needed for some of the homework problems. Their use is also permitted on the midterms and the final, although all exam problems can be solved without one.

Calculators are not allowed on the skills test. See the Grading Policy for further details.

Getting Help:

Help can be obtained from several sources. Recitation is a good time to ask questions of your TA, as is (usually) before and after class. Both your TA and your instructor hold regular office hours; use them. Appointments can also be made at other times, and you can reach us by email. It is important to get help early if you are having difficulty, especially if you're so stuck that you don't feel able to ask intelligent questions.

Mathematics Learning Center:

The Mathematics Learning Center (MLC) provides drop-in help for all lower division mathematics courses. The MLC is located on the ground floor of Kidder Hall (Kidder 108), and is normally open M-F from 9 AM to 6 PM (Fridays to 5 PM), from the second week of term through Dead Week (Week 10). The MLC also provides evening tutoring in the Valley Library Su-Th from 6-10 PM.
