Web Site Navigation & The ICARE Model

Class Web Site
You can navigate this web site by using the set of drop-down menus at the top of each page, which take you to the following areas:

  • Home/Introduction
The Home Page provides a brief overview of the class.

  • Class Information
This option provides a drop-down menu of pages that describe class expectations, the competencies

you'll develop in this class, how your grade will be determined, and required and recommended texts & software.

  • Modules
This option provides a drop-down list of the learning modules of this course. They follow the class

lectures closely, and act as additional tutorials to help you get the class material under your fingers.

  • Schedule
This selection also drops-down into a list that includes a course outline page, a monthly calendar

briefly displaying what the lectures will cover, and a set of pages showing what will be covered on a week-by-week basis.

In addition, there is a navigation line just under the menu area telling you where and how deep you are in the site, so just refer to this line if you ever feel like you've gotten lost.

The ICARE System
Each Module is presented using a learning methodology developed by SDSU Educational Technology professors called ICARE. ICARE is an acronym for the sections that each module is divided into:

  • Introduce
This subsection Introduces the material to be covered, and briefly describes it's relationship to material already covered and how this module relates to the rest of the class material.
  • Connect
This section gives the bulk of the material on the module, breaking it down into manageable pieces, describing each piece in detail, and giving examples on it's relevance and use.
  • Apply
This section allows students to apply what they've learned and to test how well they understand the concepts presented, through test questions with immediate feedback.
  • Reflect
This portion of the module provides the student with an opportunity to think back on what has been learned, and how it applies to the overall class structure; students reflect on the knowledge they've developed in part by discussing it with classmates.
  • Extend
Here is where students try to expand on the lesson information by thinking about other ways it can be applied in various situations. Students are challenged to go beyond the module material in this section.
