Art About Science Card |
Week 6 Recitation |
Connect science to another field by generating an art card representing an aspect of science. | Although creativity is a key component of scientific thinking and the research process, it is often stressed less than logical thinking and specific problem solving in science courses. In this portfolio assignment you have the opportunity to creatively link art with science. Thinking back over all of the science you have explored in school or through life experiences, select one positive experience and create an art card (2.5 by 3.5 inches) that expresses this memory. This can be a topic covered in this course or any other tropic related to science from your experiences. Direct your theme to something that could be displayed in a multi-generational public location. The work can be a collage, creative photo, a drawing, a construction, or other format, but it needs to fit into the card sleeve provided in class. If you are using pieces of other people's work, be sure it is significantly altered and not the majority of the piece, this card is your own work. Along with your art card, include either on the back of the card, or on a separate piece of paper the same size: the title, your name (can be a signature), and the media used (paper, paint, etc.). Be creative and substantial in the assembly of your art card. For safety, do not include any materials that are potentially hazardous, and collect responsibly. Some examples of Art About Science cards are on display in the hall case outside of the lab. | |
Olfaction Data Analysis |
Week 6 Laboratory |
Collect and interpret olfactory sensory data. Interpretation and understanding of sensory data can impact perception of the world around us. | This assignment consists of three parts. (1) Smell each of the 26 scents and record perceptions on the provided olfactory data sheet, (2) Check your tentative identification against the correct identification (provided in class and posted on-line at the website) and record the correct identification on the data sheet, (3) Write a summary about what you have learned about your sense of smell (which scents you liked the most/least, which scents [if any] elicited memories, and your ability to classify scents by family or identify what they actually were). This activity needs to be completed and stamped in recitation, or made up in week 7 GTA office hours. | This assignment is worth 4.0 points. 2.0 are given for the completed data sheet (0.4 points for each of the five columns). 2.0 points are given for the summary of the results (0.5 for discussion of scents you liked the most and least, 0.5 for memory information, 0.5 points for family classification information, and 0.5 points for identification abilities). A stamp is required to receive points for this assignment. |
Learning Reflection |
Week 7 Recitation |
Reflect on factors that may be positively and negatively impacting learning. Since the primary role of a student is learning, improvements in the process can be significant. | Discuss how you can utilize goal insight, repetition, trial and error, and reduction of interferences to improve your own learning in university courses. | This assignment is worth 4.0 points, 1.0 point for discussion of each of the aspects of learning (goal insight, repetition, trial and error, and interferences). |
Cancer Risk Analysis |
Week 7 Laboratory |
Determine strategies related to cancer prevention. Prevention, along with early detection, is key to remaining healthy. | This assignment has two steps. First, go to the risk analysis questionnaires on-line at: http://www.yourdiseaserisk.wustl.edu/ and select "cancer" from the disease choices (this link is also available through the BI 103 website). Next, choose and complete three of the cancer questionnaires from the list provided. Be sure they are appropriate for your gender. For the portfolio assignment, name the three cancers you selected, and list the recommendations that the website suggests to reduce the risk of getting these cancers. You do not need to turn in your risk analysis results (high risk, low risk) or any of the information asked for on the questionnaire, only a summary of the recommendations that will lower your risk, or keep your risk low. In some case these may simply be suggestions to continue current activities. | This assignment is worth 4.0 points (1.0 for listing the three cancers you selected, and 3.0 points for the recommendations to reduce risk). |
Blood Glucose Summary |
Week 8 Recitation |
Summarize how blood glucose levels are maintained in the body. Summarizing a complex process can assist in strengthening the link between concepts and vocabulary. | Summarize in paragraph-form how blood glucose levels are maintained in the body. Include and use correctly the following terms in your summary: glucose, insulin, glucagon, glycogen, pancreas, muscle cells. | This assignment is worth 4.0 points (1.0 point each for correct use of insulin and glucagon; 0.5 each for correct use of glucose, glycogen, pancreas, muscle cells). |
Macroparasite Internet Research |
Week 8 Laboratory |
Locate and summarize information on the Internet related to a macroparasite. | Locate at least four internet sites with information related to a macroparasite of your choice, and write two summary paragraphs. The first paragraph should contain information on where the macroparasite is primarily located in the world, its life cycle, and how humans get infected with the macroparasite. The second paragraph should describe possible human symptoms from being infected with the macroparasite, possible treatments, and the approximate number of people who are impacted by the macroparasite. Supply the complete URL web page address and title for at least four Internet sources, and include citations to these sources within the paragraphs. Be sure to put the information in your own words, do not "cut/paste" or paraphrase the source information. | This assignment is worth 5.0 points. The first paragraph is worth 2.0 points (0.5 point for location of macroparasite, 1.0 point macroparasite life cycle, and 0.5 point for how humans get infected. The second paragraph is worth 2.0 points (1.0 point for symptoms, 0.5 point for treatments, and 0.5 point for number of people infected). The list of four Internet sources is worth 0.5 points, and the in-text citations are worth 0.5 points. No points will be given for this entire assignment if sources of information are not provided. |
