The X Window System

 

Having a high resolution display is not enough. You still need a program in order to use the display. That program frequently is provided by the X Window System, X for short. The system provides support for input devices like keyboards and mice, as well as protocols to let users manipulate windows with graphics in them. As discussed in Chapter 4, Looking through X Windows, the working environment is pleasant, friendly, and becoming universal; yet it is challenging to modify and taxing on your system resources.
