Lecture (25 minutes)

  • SWBQ: Write down the Schrodinger Equation
  • SWBQ: What is the Hamiltonian for a 2D box with different side lengths?
  • Refresher on separation of variables–show most of the steps but go quickly, emphasize what separable means as a product of functions.
  • SWBQ: What is the solution to the time equation? (Students should cheat!)
  • Quick group activity: one half of the room solve X, the other solve Y, don't remind them of the boundary conditions until they struggle
  • Talk about what the boundary conditions are, why they make sense, and what effect they have on the solutions
