Drawing Frequency Plots
Prompts
“Suppose you have a sinusoidal driving voltage, that oscillates at the resonance frequency of the circuit, as a function of time (as you see on your oscilloscope). Plot the Fourier component of the amplitude of the driving voltage with respect to the frequency.”
“Now you have a new experiment where the frequency of the driving voltage is greater than the resonance frequency. Plot the Fourier component of the amplitude of the driving voltage with respect to the frequency.”
“Imagine you are doing multiple experiments using multiple frequencies with the same driving voltage and the same phase. What would your outcome plot looked like?”
Context
This series of SWBQ is used to help the students' understanding of LRC circuit. This SWBQs are best followed by the LRC Circuit:Impulse Driver.
Wrap Up
These questions are designed to guide the students to answer the question “What happened if we apply all the input frequencies at the same time?”. The students used the Fourier: Making Waves java applet to visualize the response of the circuit. The students then prove their answer by doing the LRC Circuit: Impulse Driver experiment.
