Before learning about the density operator, students should:

• Know postulates 1-5 of quantum mechanics.
• Have experience using quantum operators in both bra-ket and matrix notation.
• Know how to perform the outer product of two quantum state vectors.
• Previous experience with matrix operations, particularly the trace, is useful.
