Superposition of Electric Fields
Prerequisites
Students should be able to:
- Identify the direction of curvilinear unit vectors at different points in space.
- Find line, area, and volume integrals.
- Determine the vector that results from adding up other vectors.
In-class Content
- Drawing Electric Field Vectors (SGA - 25 min)
- Paul had students do the linear quadrupole. Most students drew electric field lines, then drew vectors along those field lines when specifically prompted.
- Electric Field Due to a Ring of Charge (SGA - 50 + 40 min)
- This activity took 50 minutes before the series expansion, then 40 minutes to do the series expansion (and it was worth doing because students were really struggling with how to expand and the “rules” for power series expansions to certain orders).
