The Instructional Strategy of Reflection

The students finished off the last part of class by reflecting in their science journals about what they already knew, what they had learned, and what they were still curious about. After they have finished writing their responses, Emily asks each student to share their reflections with the rest of the class. Collectively, they came up with some thoughtful remarks about their first day of class. The students mostly talked about the aspects of the course they liked so far.

What did you like/learn?
The freedom to explore
Working with partners and being able to bounce ideas off of each other
Bringing my own ideas into the learning process and coming out of my comfort zone
That class was fun and interesting
Drawing and writing as a tool to brainstorm what I already know
Using emotions to foster learning
Having practical applications to connect what I am learning with my daily experiences



What are you still curious about?
Could we have come up with other ideas/questions that we could have explored more?
How does a natural light source, the sun, compare to an artificial light sources, the light bulb?
How could you make a math lesson/objective out of this activity?
If we had more time, what other things might we have discovered?
I'm interested in exploring what happens when you have multiple shadows.
How can we make outside relationships of shadows interesting enough to be explored in the classroom?
