Physics 111 Spring 2015 Aspects That Foster Science Learning

Introducing the Task:
Each small group gets chart paper and magic markers to draw pictures of themselves as successful learners about light and to make a list of aspects that fostered their learning.
• Think about something about light that you learned at some point in your life, inside or outside of school, that you enjoyed learning.
• Share this experience with your group members.
• Draw a picture of yourself when you were learning about light and enjoying the process.
• We are modeling integrating art and science. Please make a large, vivid, colorful picture that will interest others.
• Note the age you were when you learned this.
• What fostered your learning in that instance?
• Share your reflections with your group members.
• Add a list on your chart for aspects of your learning experiences that helped you learn about light in effective and enjoyable ways.

See Day 1 plans for further details.

Small groups present their charts to the whole group.
Then the whole group analyzes aspects that had fostered learning in these instances.

This class reported the following aspects that had fostered their science learning:
Learning hands-on
Access to books/resources
Support from families, education
Use of the environment: outdoor, camps, OMSI
Going to museums/planetarium
Visual experiences
Doing experiments
