Documenting Initial Knowledge about the Sun and the Moon

Students re-completed the diagnostic that they did during the beginning of the term. A basketball was placed on one side of the room (lights were turned out, the ball was only lit by a lamp). The diagnostic asked:

  1. How can you see the basketball?
  2. How can your classmates on the other side of the room see the basketball?
  3. Explain with words and a sketch.

The students also re-did the diagnostic about the sun and the moon:

* Why does it get dark at night?
* Why is it cold in the winter and hot in the summer?
* Why does the moon seem to have different shapes at different times?
* How would you define a “scientific explanation”?
* How would you define “inquiry approaches to learning and teaching”?
