TRANSFER TABLES OF CHEMISTRY COURSES TO OSU FROM OUT OF STATE SCHOOLS

In general, OSU does not display articulation tables for universities, colleges, or community colleges that are not in Oregon.

The Single Course Search tool can be used to display the established articulations from other schools for any particular subject such as chemistry (CH).

Some chemistry courses articulate to OSU as a specific OSU chemistry courses. Other chemistry courses will articulate without an OSU number as denoted by LDT (lower division transfer) or UDT (upper division transfer). These chemistry courses may or may not satisfy the specific chemistry requirements for a major or minor.

A student should contact an academic adviser in the specific department of interest for clarification of the department's general chemistry or organic chemistry requirements. The tables below provide some guidance about how transfer courses can be used to fulfill chemistry requirements at OSU.

Transfer from schools with semesters to OSU with quarters will never work smoothly. In many but not all cases, a complete year (two semesters) of a general chemistry (or organic chemistry) from another school will be considered to fulfill the general chemistry (or organic chemistry) requirements (3 quarters) of most programs at OSU. However, this will not be indicated in the OSU articulation tables because two semester courses will articulate as two quarter courses (i.e., one quarter missing) in most cases.

Basic chemistry or general chemistry courses or sequences from other schools may not articulate to OSU as CH 221 - 223 (or CH 231 - 233 lectures and CH 261 - 263 labs) or as CH 121 - 123) because the topics and level of coverage do not match the CH 221 - 223 (or CH 121-123) sequence at OSU. The CH 121-123 sequence is unique to OSU and transfer courses are rarely articulated to OSU as CH 121 - 123. Rather the articulation will often be to CH 221-223 which is considered acceptable by the chemistry department for fulfilling the requirement of CH 121-123 because it is a higher-level sequence. In some cases, articulation to specific OSU CH general chemistry courses is not possible. However the sequence may still be suitable to meet the requirements for college general chemistry or as a prerequisite for CH 331 at OSU. This suitability is determined by consulting the tables below for specific schools and courses.

Some of lower-level chemistry courses or sequences are based on a general/organic/biochemistry or GOB textbook rather than a traditional general chemistry textbook (used at OSU) which has no coverage of biochemistry and little coverage of organic chemistry. The GOB sequence is often the chemistry sequence intended for pre-nursing majors and is not intended for science majors or students whom plan to enroll in more advanced chemistry courses. Hence, the large differences in topics covered and depth of coverage of many topics makes a traditional general chemistry sequence and a GOB sequence non-equivalent to OSU general chemistry sequences. A GOB sequence does not provide adequate preparation for organic chemistry at OSU.

A "general chemistry" course or sequence that does not serve as the prerequisite for an organic chemistry courses for science majors at the same school will articulate to OSU as CH LDT.  Also one-quarter or one-semester introductory courses, that often serve as prepartory courses, are not acceptable as courses equivalent to OSU courses

Many courses are articulated to OSU as chemistry (CH) credits without being identified with a specific OSU course number. The title of the transferred course is the original title of the course at the transfer school and the number of credits transferred is the same as the original course (after conversion from semester to quarter credits if necessary). Some of these courses may fulfill the OSU baccalaureate core requirement for physical science courses (*PS). In some cases, a course or sequence that does not articulate as specific OSU courses may be considered a valid substitute for an OSU course or sequence. This information is given in the tables below. If these courses with OSU course numbers are needed as enforced prerequisites for other chemistry courses, the chemistry office will provide a manual override where appropriate (as indicated in the tables below). The student must contact the chemistry office to request a manual override.

If you take the first quarter or semester of a general chemistry sequence (including lab if is a separate course), it can be used as a prerequisite for the second quarter course in an OSU sequence only if the entire sequence is allowed as a substitute for an OSU general chemistry sequence. This may require a manual override by the chemistry department, at the time of registration.

The tables below are unofficial and provided for information and are hopefully correct. The Single Course Search tool should be consulted as the official source for the articulation.

In many cases, a course may not articulate as a specific OSU course (i.e., as CH LDT), but the course still will serve as a prerequisite for other chemistry courses. This situation requires that you contact the OSU chemistry department for an override to be able to register for a course.

From Fall 2012, courses articulated to OSU as CH 221 - 223 will be articulated as CH 231 - 233 lectures and CH 261 - 263 labs.

For the Idaho schools shown below, the courses are semester courses and two semesters of general chemistry do not articulate as three specific OSU general chemistry courses but rather as CH LDT or, in some cases, as CH 221 and CH 223 plus general LDT credits. If the articulation is for CH 221 and CH 223, the transfer sequence is considered to fulfill the requirements at OSU for one year of general chemistry (CH 121 - 123 or CH 221 - 223). In some cases, a sequence that articulates only as LDT credits still fulfills the requirements at OSU for one year of general chemistry (CH 121 - 123 or CH 221 - 223) as shown in the tables below.

Other 100 level chemistry courses such as CHEM 100, 121, 127. 150, 191 do not substitute for any CH courses at OSU or meet OSU requirements.

Students who plan to transfer to OSU and need general chemistry (CH 121 - 123 or CH 221 - 223) for their major at OSU, including science and pre-health majors, or for the chemistry minor, must take CHM 103 and 104 or CHM 103 & 115 with lecture and lab. This sequence meets the requirements for one year of college general chemistry, as a prerequisite for CH 331 or CH 334 at OSU, and for the chemistry minor.  The combination of CHEM 325 and 326 meet the requirements of the CH 331 - 332 and CH 334 - 336 organic chemistry sequences. To together they meet the requirement of CH 337 or CH 361 and OSU including for use of an UD lab for the chemistry minor.
