It has long been thought (wishful thinking?) that Mars offers the best chance
for the discovery of life on another planet in our Solar System. In this
talk, we consider the recent announcement of the discovery of evidence of
fossilized micro-organisms on Mars by McKay et al. (1996, Science,
273 (5227), 924). We review the evidence and discuss whether the case
has been made or has not yet been made that life once existed on Mars.
