Course Description:
-
This course is an introduction to Riemannian geometry, covering the following
topics:
- Riemannian metrics
- Covariant differentiation
- Geodesics
- Curvature
We will apply these ideas in the context of two main classes of examples,
namely surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space and general relativity.
-
Prerequisites:
-
Prior exposure to manifolds and tensors, such as MTH 674 or equivalent, is
helpful but not essential, as these topics will be reviewed at the beginning
of the course. Students unsure of whether their background is sufficient are
encouraged to discuss this with the instructor.
