Text materials for MTH 255H

The approach to vector calculus used in this course can not currently be found in any traditional textbook.

As part of a national project to improve the teaching of vector calculus, we have developed an approach to teaching this material that emphasizes geometric reasoning and conceptual understanding. We are writing an online textbook using this approach; this is an ongoing process, which is nearing completion.

Where does this leave you?

• The primary text will be the online textbook The Geometry of Vector Calculus, by Tevian Dray and Corinne A. Manogue. This book is freely available, but no printed version exists.
• You are not required to purchase a copy of Briggs/Cochran, the text currently used in MTH 251–254.
  However, if you already have a copy of that book — or any other traditional calculus textbook — you will likely find it a useful reference, so long as you are aware that its approach differs considerably from that used in class.

The online textbook does not contain homework problems...

Only a few problems will be assigned each week. These are typically more challenging and/or conceptual problems, not routine skills checks. You are strongly encouraged to work additional problems yourself, such as those in Briggs/Cochran or any other standard calculus textbook. Further information about available resources will be discussed in class.
