Text materials for MTH 255H

The approach to vector calculus used in this course can not currently be found in any traditional textbook.

As part of a national project to improve the teaching of vector calculus, we have developed an approach to teaching this material that emphasizes geometric reasoning and conceptual understanding. We are writing an online textbook using this approach; this is an ongoing process, which is nearing completion.

Where does this leave you?

The online textbook does not contain homework problems...

Only a few problems will be assigned each week. These are typically more challenging and/or conceptual problems, not routine skills checks. You are strongly encouraged to work additional problems yourself, such as those in Briggs/Cochran or any other standard calculus textbook. Further information about available resources will be discussed in class.

Constructive feedback on the content, presentation, and usefulness of the online text are welcome, and can be sent to me via email, or anonymously by leaving a note with my name on it in the mathematics department office (Kidder 368).
