GRADING POLICY

Grades:
Your grade will be based on the following 3 scores (scaled to 100 points each):
Labs (lowest 2 scores dropped), Midterm, Final
Labs:
Labs involve group work followed by an individual write-up of the result, which can not always be completed during recitation, and which is normally due within a few days of the lab.
Credit is only possible if you are actually present during lab.

Homework:
The suggested homework problems do not need to be turned in, and will not be graded. However, you will regularly be asked to work similar problems in class, which will be counted as an extra lab grade.

Exams:
There will be a single midterm and a final. All exams will be closed book; the use of (both sides of) a 3×5 index card of notes is permitted. The final is comprehensive, but will emphasize newer material.
(The index cards are cumulative: you may bring all previous cards to all exams.)

Please note that missing the final automatically results in a grade of I.
(If you are not doing passing work otherwise, missing the final results in a grade of F.)

Makeups:
Makeup exams will only be given in truly exceptional cases, although renegotiation of the grading scheme is possible. For instance, a missed midterm could possibly be covered by counting the final double. Except in emergencies, all such arrangements must be made before the corresponding exam. There will be no makeup labs.
