WHICH EDITION OF THE TEXT?
This is the first year that the 4th edition of Stewart's calculus text
is being used for MTH 255. There is very little difference between the 3rd
and 4th editions so far as vector calculus is concerned. Officially, you
should have the 4th edition. In practice, you can get by with the 3rd.
-
The required texts are:
- James Stewart,
Calculus,
4th edition
- Tevian Dray, Calculus Study Guide -- MTH 255
-
You may use either the Early Transcendentals version or the shorter
Multivariable version of Stewart; they are identical except for page
numbers and chapter numbers.
-
There are only minor differences between the coverage of vector calculus in
the 3rd and 4th editions, although the sections have been renumbered. You
may therefore use the 3rd edition of Stewart (in either
version).
-
The Study Guide has not yet been updated for the 4th edition. The only
important changes are the renumbering of both sections and problems. An
updated list of problems will be handed out in class, and is also available
here.
-
Assigned problems will be taken from the Early Transcendentals version
of the 4th edition. You are responsible for making sure that
you are covering the correct material, and doing the right problems.
Below is the basic translation between the editions.
