Text materials for MTH 254H

The approach to multivariable and vector calculus used in this course can not currently be found in any traditional textbook.

As part of a national project (see also this site) to improve the teaching of multivariable and vector calculus, we have developed an approach to teaching this material that emphasizes geometric reasoning and conceptual understanding. We are writing an online textbook using this approach; this is an ongoing process, which is nearing completion.

Where does this leave you?

• The primary text will be the online textbook The Geometry of Vector Calculus, by Tevian Dray and Corinne A. Manogue. This book is freely available, but no printed version exists.
• You are not required to purchase any other textbook.
  However, if you already have a printed copy of any traditional calculus textbook, you will likely find it a useful reference, so long as you are aware that its approach differs considerably from that used in class. The same applies to the open source textbook currently used in regular sections of MTH 254.

Our online textbook does not contain homework problems...

Only a few problems will be assigned each week. These are typically more challenging and/or conceptual problems, not routine skills checks. You are strongly encouraged to work additional problems yourself, such as those in any other standard calculus textbook. Further information about available resources will be discussed in class.

Constructive feedback on the content, presentation, and usefulness of the online text is welcome.
