Prerequisite: MTH 111: College Algebra
A quick review of basic algebra concepts appears in Chapter P at the beginning
of the text. Rules for fractions and
exponents can be found on the course home
page. You must be comfortable with these formulas in order to do well
in the course. If you are rusty, it is highly recommended that you review
this material immediately.
Calculators:
You are strongly encouraged to have a graphing calculator, which you may use
on all exams, quizzes, and homework (unless explicitly stated otherwise).
However, most problems, can in principle be solved without one. You may learn
more by first trying to solve the problem by hand, then using the calculator
to check your answer. Nevertheless, using a calculator can often make it
easier to solve a problem, and may be essential if numerical answers are
required.
Any model of graphing calculator can be used in principle. For
specific recommendations, please consult the
Math Department calculator page. Your TA may be able to assist you with
specific questions, but it is your own responsibility to learn how to use your
calculator. However, the Study Guide does give specific calculator tips for
the TI-85 and HP-48G. You may also wish to consult the
WWW Calculator Tutorial.
(The Tutorial has no official connection to the course, and is included
as a service only.)
Homework:
You should try the suggested homework problems as soon as possible after the
corresponding lecture, and certainly before the next recitation. Homework
will not be graded, but forms the basis for the quizzes and lab work.
Get help immediately if you have trouble.
MLC:
The Mathematics Learning Center (MLC) provides drop-in help for all lower
division mathematics courses. The MLC is located on the ground floor of
Kidder Hall (Kidder 108), and is open M-F from 9 AM to 4 PM, from the second
week of term through Dead Week (Week 10).

Help can be obtained from several sources. First, try your TA. If your
question is not addressed during recitation, go to your TA's office hours.
Second, try the MLC. Third, try asking me (or another student) before or
after class. Fourth, come to my office hours. Appointments can be made with
your TA or with me at times other than the scheduled office hours. You can
also send email to your TA or to me.
