Calculators:
You are strongly encouraged to have a graphing calculator such as the TI-85,
which you may use on all exams, quizzes, and homework. However, no exam or
quiz problems will require the use of a calculator, and most if not all
homework problems which indicate the use of a calculator can be solved without
one. You may learn more by first trying to solve the problem by hand, then
using the calculator to check your answer.
Your TA may be able to assist you with specific questions, but it is your
own responsibility to learn how to use your calculator.

Homework:
You should try the
suggested homework problems
as soon as possible after the corresponding lecture, and certainly before the
next recitation. Homework will not be graded, but forms the basis for the
quizzes.
Quizzes:
Excepting the first week (and weeks in which there is a midterm), there will
be a 20 minute quiz at the end of each recitation section. The quizzes will
be based on the homework problems corresponding to material covered through
the end of the previous week; they are closed book, but open notes.

There will be 2 evening midterms, scheduled for Tuesdays from 6-7:20 PM,
scheduled for 28 October and 18 November. The final is scheduled for
Thursday, 11 December, from 7:30-9:20 AM. All exams will be closed book; the
use of a 3×5 index card of notes (and a calculator) is permitted.
Midterm 1 covers §1.1-§1.6 and §2.1-§2.6.
Midterm 2 covers §3.1-§3.5 and §4.1-§4.5.
The final is comprehensive; it covers the above material plus
§5.1-§5.5.
(The material in the additional sections listed in italics on the
schedule will not be tested.)
Makeup exams will only be given in exceptional cases, and in any case must be
arranged before the scheduled exam time. There will be no makeups of quizzes.
The section in the book entitled How to Study Calculus (pages
xxix-xxx) is well worth reading.
The Mathematics Learning Center (MLC) provides drop-in help for all lower
division mathematics courses. The MLC is located on the ground floor of
Kidder Hall (Kidder 108), and is open M-F from 9 AM to 4 PM, from the second
week of term through Dead Week (Week 10).
