Any data or graphs must be labeled with your name, the date (including year), the sample(s) identification, and correctly labeled axes, columns etc. Data that lack any of these are useless in a few days.

Rotation students on TA appointments who are signed up for N credits of PH401, PH501, PH601 are expected to commit at least 3N hours a week to research. Please attend the weekly colloquium and solid state seminar, and grads please attend orals lunch.

Summer 2019 goals:
Acacia: Measure temperature-dependent (77K - 300K) transport properties of ITO (metal), TiO2 (semiconductor). TiO2: Compare pre and post for each sample (brookite, anatase, rutile and mixtures; also photoactive). TiO2 11 (B/R) & 49 (B/R) are semiconducting pre and post, but with post samples more conductive. Activation energy for resistance is greater in higher resistivity samples. • Try to find samples with post samples less conductive and compare activation energies, mobilities etc. • Measure photoactive samples • Do the photoactive samples change resistivity when UV light is shine on them during a measurement? • Search literature for activation energies etc. for TiO2
ITO: Measure rho(T), n(T), mu(T) for ITO and try to fit to Bloch-Grüneisen law. • Check thickness via ellipsometry • Jenn Amador may have interesting SnO2:F films to measure • Could try to find different thicknesses of ITO to test whether quantum effects are visible.
Long term - could go to higher temperatures in high-T Hall probe if there are interesting things to learn (lower priority). Coordinate with Okan while Janet is away.
Cameron: Measure R and T of Okan's TiO2 samples (brookite, anatase, rutile and mixtures; also photoactive) on the grating spectrometer. Coordinate with Joseph who is measuring on the ellipsometer. Both coordinate with Acacia when particular samples are interesting. Learn the index calc spread sheet to analyse for thickness. Try to set up SCOUT to get thickness from fitting. Coordinate with Okan while Janet is away.
Joseph: Measure R and T of Okan's TiO2 samples (brookite, anatase, rutile and mixtures; also photoactive) on the ellipsometer. Coordinate with Cameron who is measuring on the grating spectrometer. Both coordinate with Acacia when particular samples are interesting. Try to set up SCOUT to get thickness etc. to match results from software on ellipsometer. Coordinate with Okan while Janet is away.
Elena: Measure Brownian motion of 3-µm microspheres with video camera. Analyze with ImageJ, using techniques from the papers you've read. Compare to 1-µm microspheres. Use different viscosity liquids. How is it best to pose the problem - as a measurement of viscosity? As a measurement of Avogadro's number? As an investigation of thermal fluctuations?
Will purchasing a fluorescent system allow us to track simple cells? Coordinate with Bo Sun and Ethan Minot while Janet is away.
