LaTeX to HTML to CANVAS, with LaTeXML.
Workflow and examples
1. Real and complex document
Here are the sample document content notes. You should use sections and subsections.
1.1. First notes
We consider a first order PDE in of the form
| (1a) | |||
| (1b) | |||
On the right hand side we have , but later in Section 1.3 we have a function depending on .
More content goes here.
STEP 1.
Set up the characteristic directions.
You can try now to apply (1b) to find which gives the solution .
Sometimes you can stop here.
STEP 2.
We check if reference to Section 1.1 worked.
When the relationship is smooth and nonlinear, we should check the Jacobian matrix (the matrix of partials) is nonsingular
| (2) |
More precisely, we need to verify on the auxiliary curve so we check if the double subscript worked.
For theorem-like environments, you need another level of nesting
Theorem 1.
Theorem-like environments work in the conversion to HMTL. However, LaTeXML converts their headers to h6, and occasionally you need the above nested h4 (for subsections) and h5 (only available with paragraphs).
Therefore to get high CAA, you should include theorems in paragraphs, or maybe write fancy macros to do this automatically.
Alternatively, you could modify the .ltxml file that handles the newthorem environment. I have not tested that.
One can also redefine a new theorem-like environment to automatically include these in paragraphs.
LemmaLaTeXML.
Testing unnumbered lemmas works with LaTeXML.
Another challenge is that you will still obtain a message from CAA “This HTML file contains tables that are missing headers”. But CANVAS says “We are updating the guidance for this issue”.
Theorem 2.
Using bigskip in LaTeX works.
Proof.
Did it work? Evidence shows yes, in PDF and HTML; see the space above Theorem 2. ∎
1.2. Constant coefficient example
We obtain
| (3) |
We test the inline equations and how they will be read. We wliminate to see and . After more steps we obtain
| (4) |
or with our own macro
| (5) |
same as (4).
1.3. New section
We test a variety of things, e.g., how to go to Section 1.1 following links in HTML and how to check references to floats, e.g. to tables.
We also consider other ways to delineate formulas without the itemize environment.
(A) , and must calculate , with complex inline formulas.
(B) , with more subscripts.
2. Last but not least: manual handling of LaTeX or HTML files
Here we mention last challenge, to be repeated in the LaTeX2HTML2Canvas document.
Even though we intend for the LaTeX file to be converted automatically to HTNL, at this time, CANVAS Ally tool will require that you set the language of your file. So we add this by editing the HTML document and adding a statement lang=us in the preamble of HTML document (tag “hmtl”).
