Homework Set 3

Due Friday, October 24 in class.

A. Problems from text.

2.7, 2.19, 3.5.

B. Additional problems.

1. Write a potential energy diagram for rotation about C2-C3 in pentane. Include quantitative information (energies of stable species & transition states).

2. In class, we saw how a 5-endo-trig ring closure was problematic. Draw a 3-dimensional projection of molecules you could use to test the facility of a 5-exo-trig closure and a 7-endo-trig closure. In separate diagrams, show as clearly as possible the important orbital overlaps that lead to these being favorable.

3. The two epimers of glucosyl bromide ionize at different rates. Explain how the Hammond postulate applies to this example.
