You should first make sure a background spectrum has been collected. Then, place your sample into the spectrometer.
There are two ways of gaining access to the sample area.
The large grey fitting can be lifted for easy access. One drawback is that this fully exchanges the (dry) purged atmosphere in the sample area with the (wet) lab air. An extensive (2-4 min.) purge is necessary to allow water levels to drop. |

Alternatively, a small slide may be opened on top. This requires more dexterity in placing the cell in the holder, but there is less air exchange, and you can get by with only about a 1-minute purge. | |
In all cases, you need to assure that the laser beam (which is coincident with the IR
source beam) passes through the sample. Do not look directly at the beam! It can damage your eyesight. |
