Nomenclature for Aldehydes & Ketones

The suffixes "-one" for ketones and "-al" for aldehydes are the general IUPAC features for naming these compounds.

A common method of naming ketones is to name the two pieces on either side of the carbonyl:

Simple aldehydes can also be named using root names similar to carboxylic acids, substituting "-yraldehyde" for "-yric acid."

Phenyl ketones will often be seen named as a "-phenone":
