Exam 1 CH 203
April 20, 1995
There are three pages and eleven questions on this exam. Be
sure you have them all.
1. Describe or define precisely (or give an
example)
Isomers
Heterocycle
Tertiary amine
2. Draw molecular structures representing each of the following:
carboxylic acid
diene
aromatic
ether
thiol
ketone
3.
A.) A molecule of the type responsible for poison oak itch is shown to the right:
Identify by name each of the functional groups in this molecule.
B.) In which would you expect this molecule to be more soluble and why: pure water, acidic water, or basic water?
4. Draw a molecule which can have cis and trans
isomers and give the IUPAC name of each isomer.
5.
A.) Give the IUPAC name of the following compound:
B.) How many different mono-substituted isomers would result from the reaction of this molecule with chlorine? Draw each of them.
6.
A.) Draw the compound that results when N-methylpropylamine is added to an aqueous acid solution?
B. Would you expect this molecule to be more, or less, soluble in water than the amine?
Why?
7. What two compounds result from the successive oxidation of
ethanol? Name the compounds.
8. Given: 454 grams = 1 pound; 1 quart = 32 ounces; 1 pound of
sugar is about 2 cups; 1 quart = 0.9463 liters.
A packet of Kool-Aid brand Kickin' Kiwi-Lime artificially flavored, unsweetened soft drink mix contains 4.8 grams of powder, costs 25¢, and makes two quarts. One cup of sugar is required to make two quarts of the soft drink. A five-pound bag of sugar costs $ 1.49. Determine the cost of an 8-oz serving of the soft drink. Show your work.
9. What alcohol and ether could have the formula C3H8O?
Which would you expect to have a lower boiling
point and why?
10. Indigo dyeing produces a dyed fabric with dye only on the
surface of the fibers. Why?
11.
A.) Draw a few units of the polymer which might result from polymerizing
B.) Is the structure unique or are there other polymer structures that could be formed?
Explain.
