Cryogenics

Frost forming on the outside of the cryogenics chamber indicates a leak in the system and can potentially be very damaging to the system and the sample. First, turn off the compressor and slowly heat the chamber back up to room temperature. Possible causes:

Sample

If the sample shatters while trying to mount it to the copper blocks it could be that you should try tightening each screw a little bit at a time in a criss-cross fashion (that is, try tightening screws just a little bit at a time starting in one corner, then crossing to the furthest corner and tightening that one a little bit). It can be extremely frustrating to tighten the screws tight enough that the sample is secure, but not so tight that the substrate breaks.

Tektronix DM5120

The pdf version of the manual can be found [here].

	* If the Tektronix DM5120 blinks between extreme potential values or reads --.--- mV, then the sample is probably not in electrical contact with the copper blocks. Try removing the sample and cleaning the blocks then lay fresh indium strips down on them. If this does not help try applying indium directly to the sample using a wooden dowel to press the indium down firmly on the sample (take care not to touch the sample with…
