Internships do more than just boost a students' resume's girth. They offer opportunities for students to present themselves to employers and graduate schools; the provide a venue to learn to work in teams, work under deadlines, apply their skills and knowledge; they provide students with an opportunity to "try out" a career; they teach students to be resourceful and efficient problem solvers; they offer students an important opportunity to work closely with a professional in a career related to their plans, a situation which usually generates the most insightful and valuable reference letters a student might present to graduate schools and to potential employers. The internships can also serve as a way to introduce students to disciplines other than mathematics: there are opportunities in many branches of science, engineering, and business, and in fact, we even encourage students to pursue internships in disciplines unrelated to their major.
