§ 23.B: Creating and Modifying Pictures

A kind of multimedia you may have done by hand is creating pictures. Some of the drawing and painting packages available on Macs and PCs are very good at this, and you may want to use them and then transfer (fetch, ftp) your masterpieces to a Unix- or Web-compatible format.

We recommend the free program xfig for drawing on a Unix machine. It has windows, pull-down menus, and is generally very similar to a Mac or PP drawing program. Start xfig from the command line

where the & puts the command in background (so you can still use the command line)

If you have a picture file which you need to modify (e.g. to crop, add titles, or change colors), we recommend the program xv. It is straightforward and friendly to use.

For example, use may want to make a digital picture of yourself using a "camera" (really a charged-coupled device) connected to a computer, or scan one of your favorites into digital form. You can then use xv to make your picture closer to the image you have of yourself.

To start xv, simply type xv followed by the file name you wish to modify (where, again, the & is to place the command in background):

If you want to display your pictures on the Web, you probably want to save them in the gif or jpeg format. Next we discuss how to use Unix to display your data graphically.
