12.A.1. Forwarding Your Mail | 12. email | 12. email |
Anyone affiliated with the Oregon State University can get a free account on the central computer ucs.orst.edu (ucs for short). That computer provides free, reliable email, with staff employed to keep the mailers up to date and running all day, every day. We strongly recommend that you use ucs for your mail.
Because some people on the Department cluster may wish to send you mail
and not know your ucs
address, you should create a
.forward
file on the Department cluster. This file will
automatically forwards your mail to wherever
you want. We discuss forwarding in the next section.
An email addresses consist of your userid followed by the machine name including all domains:
smithjoe@ucs.orst.edu
Even though a cluster of workstations may share the same file space, they still retain their individual identities. This means mail sent to one machine on a cluster is not readable from another. This is yet another reason to use ucs for your mail.
