§ 3.C: Other Questions?

Other Questions? Several World Wide Web (WWW) resources are suggested during this tutorial. If you want to bookmark them, go to the introductory page of this tutorial and click on the link for the resource you want to bookmark. Next, select "Bookmarks" with your mouse and then select "Add Bookmark" from the pull-down menu. This tutorial also explains how to use the man command, which can provide online help if you know the name of a command, or a keyword describing it. There is also online, hypertext help available (which may take some learning to get to use, and which requires the X Window System). On the DEC machines use the command:

On the IBM machines (at least hermes) use the command: There are often manuals and text books available in computer labs. However, for simple questions your best resource is probably the person sitting next to you.

If none of these resources tell you what you need to know, try asking someone in the system administration group. If you do not know who these people are, then ask one of the Unix-literate faculty members: Jansen, Landau, or Welch. There are usually some graduate students who have taken some special interest in the computer cluster for its own sake, and they may know the most of all. (They are usually not that hard to find because they are usually in the computer room.) In any case, get into the habit of asking. Usually, what you want to know is common knowledge, but not written down anyplace useful.

If there are problems with the systems, send email to "support":
