ADVISING INFORMATION

FOR

B.S. DEGREE IN APPLIED MATH

Emphasis in Computational Sciences

This outline is presented to give math students some information associated with the major in Applied Mathematics with an Emphasis in a Computational Science. It is not intended to replace the adviser. Students should see their adviser as soon as they are ready to plan their upper divisional program. THE SELECTION OF THE UPPER DIVISION WORK MUST BE APPROVED BY THE ADVISER.

The purpose of this major is to allow students with a strong interest in the mathematics aspects of a particular science to apply courses in that science to their major. A minor is not required with this major.

NOTE: Beginning Fall 1989, some courses have been renumbered. In the list below, adjacent parenthetical course numbers indicate the former course number. Also, beginning Fall 1989, computer science courses are listed as "CS", not "Math".

Upper Division Writing Requirement: Passing the University Writing Examination or completing one of the approved writing courses with a grade of C (2.0) or better.

I. Preparation for the Major:

CS 107, CS 108, CS 205; M 150; M 151; M 245 (M 371); M 252; M 254 ( M 253)*; Statistics 250. (31 units)

II. Required Courses: A minimum of 36 upper division units to include: M 336, M 337, M 521A, M 524, M 534A;

at least 9 units selected from M 532, M 536, M 537, M541, M542, M543; CS 558, CS 575

3 units of Mathematics 499 (Senior Project); and

9 units of electives from computer science, mathematics or statistics, (approved by the Applied Mathematics Advisor) in mathematics excluding Math 302, 303, 312, 313; 314; 342A, 342B, 414, 509 and Statistics 357.

Students must see their adviser and be accepted into the major prior to enrolling in upper division course work. The selection of the upper division work must be approved by the adviser.

Students must complete an outline for major and file a copy, signed by their adviser, with the Evaluations Office and the Mathematical Sciences Department Office, and keep a copy for their own records.
