CH 361/361H Example of Finding % Polymerization for sample after equilibration and GC analysis for ampule
% polymerization = (W initial - W final) / W initial X 100 %
Weight and GC Data for Stock Solutions:
Stock 1-ene | W1 = 0.887 g | WS = 0.949g |
A1 = 4.13 X 10 4 | AS = 4.31 X 10 4 | |
Stock 2-ene | W2 = 0.709 g | WS = 0.745 g |
A2 = 5.35 X 104 | AS = 5.68 X 104 |
Response Factor Analysis
Relative response factor for 1- ene (eq. 9 , p 20 of lab manual):
P1 / PS = (A1 / AS) (WS / W1)
= (4.13 / 4.31) (0.949 / 0.887)
= 1.03
Relative response factor for 2 - ene:
P2 / PS = (A2 / AS) (WS / W2)
= (5.35 / 5.68) (0.745 / 0.709)
= 0.990
GC Data for Ampule run at 60 C 1-ene
A1 = 5.87 X 104
A2 = 5.02 X 105
AS = 6.25 X 105
The relative weights for both 1 - ene and 2 - ene in the ampule after equilibration are ( eq. 14, p 22 of lab manual):
W1 / WS = (A1 / AS) (PS / P1) and W2 / WS = (A2 / AS) (PS / P2)
Finally, use the GC areas from the analysis for the ampule after equilibration to find the % polymerization for that ampule:
% poly = (W initial - (A1 / (P1 / PS) + A2 / (P2 / PS)) WS / AS) / W initial X 100%
= (0.887 - (5.87 X 104 / 1.03 + 5.02 X 105 / 0.990) 0.949 / 6.25 X 105) / 0.887 X 100
= (0.887 - (5.70 X 104 + 5.07 X 105)1.52 X 10 -6) / 0.887 X 100
= (0.887 - 0.857) / 0.887 X 100 = 3.35 %
