LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
I am happy to provide letters of evaluation to students who request them.
Please make an appointment so that we can discuss what your plans are, and
how I can best assist you. Please understand that I write these letters
for many, many people, and I cannot remember all the details about your
particular application. It is acceptable to ask for many letters of
recommendation,
provided you take care of all the routine information that is requested.
For maximum effiiciency, I need the following things from you:
- An unofficial copy of your transcript (not required, but it helps).
Mark the courses you took from me. Mostly you took a course from me this
term or last term that I remember well, but you may also have taken one
from me last year ... or was it the year before?
- Your statement of purpose. I am happy to provide constructive criticism
if you desire, provided I receive a draft in a timely fashion. This statement helps me understand what your goals are so that I can address your qualifications specifically.
- One single sheet of paper that lists the names of the schools
and the department to which you are applying, and the deadline dates. This
is my record of the letters I have sent, and when they were sent.
- Sign the waiver of access for each school. Typically this happens online. If there is no place
for such a thing, please fill out a waiver of access form that you can obtain
from the Physics Office or online here,
and include it in your package. I do not write letters unless they are confidential.
- Fill in the portion of the application that requests this routine information
about me:
