Students need to know:

1. how to multiply matrices
2. how to find determinants
3. the form and function of the identity matrix

This activity works best if the students have done the linear transformation activity (which uses many of the same examples) and if they learned, from that activity or elsewhere, the geometric idea that the direction of an eigenvector is unchanged by a transformation.
