It was found that students were inclined to simply turn in 0, 1 and 1/2 as answers to the majority of the lab activities, without clearly showing their understanding. They were also not motivated to think about the statistical nature of their results. The lab was edited in 2010 to help improve these issues. The new version emphasizes having students observe patterns in the data, draw conclusions based on those observations, then test their conclusions with more experimentation. When grading the lab write-ups, instructors should look for sense-making in the reasoning they state for drawing conclusions, and a good effort at testing those conclusions for themselves.
