Student issues:

1) Missing subscripts. Missing $S^2$ operator equation.

2) Not sure about eigenvalues; saying spin ½ does not trigger reaction desired.

3) Most OK. Different orderings, but preferred order did come out.

4,5) I did not say (by design) that we were working in the 2-spin system, so many students did not work in the 4×4 system at first, but I helped smooth that out. Some students found matrices by inspection, others explicitly by action on states. Some confusion on labeling.

4 Feb 2011:

Overall went very well this year. Took 20-25 minutes. #1 had some issues with notation, but after a review of notation, the rest went very smoothly. Most did 4&5 by inspection, without writing down any ket eqns. For those who finished first, I asked them to add $S_z$ and $I_z$ together and see what the said about the spin of the system – a prelude to the coupled basis.
