Two Interacting Black Body Objects: Instructor's Guide

Main Ideas

  • Electromagnetic radiation
  • First and second law of thermodynamics
  • Transfer of heat
  • Black body objects

Students' Task

Estimated Time: 30 minutes

  • Students are placed in small groups and asked to describe the interaction between two black body objects of different temperatures in a vacuum.
  • The small groups must also determine how the interaction will change if one black body object is replaced with one that reflects one-third of the incident light.

Prerequisite Knowledge

  • Familiarity with the first and second thermodynamic laws
  • Basic understanding of electromagnetic radiation and its properties
  • Basic understanding of black body thermodynamics is useful
