If you don't make any other change to your classroom practice, we recommend that you at least invest in individual small whiteboards. Every time you would have asked a Socratic question to the class as a whole, turn it into a SWBQ, small-white board question. Ask everyone in the class to answer.
It works best if you allow students to signal to you that they don't know the answer by writing a question mark. Walking around the classroom as students answer, you can easily see if the whole class is lost–maybe you need to reformulate the question. >>>more about using small white boards
In these pictures, I have asked students to recall the formula for the electrostatic potential due to a point charge. We are having a class discussion about how to choose the correct answer from many partially correct answers. Notice how well the whiteboards can be propped up on the chalk trays.
Go to your favorite building supply house and ask for “that shiny white shower board stuff.”
