As always, I am out-of-time. Never fear, this is, itself, an important pedagogical strategy. You may know the story of the dying great-grandmother who is asked, by her favorite great-granddaughter for the secret recipe for the great-grandmother's plum muffins. When the dying woman gestures her great-granddaughter near, she whispers in her ear, “I never make enough.” In the classroom, always end the day with your students wanting to know more.

We are interested in building a small community of faculty/institutions who are interested in reform of the middle-division. Please contact us if you are interested.
Conclusion: What our students like most about the paradigsm, that they point to, most consistently, in exit interviews, is that we are always “checking-in” with whether or not they are understanding. This can be achieved in many different ways, but is the defining characteristic of an active-engagement, middle-division classroom.
