Laughter can be used as formative assessment - the use of understanding an in-joke to assess understanding of a concept. Example: Preface, Day 4:
(probably same year as the preface narrative, which was 2006 for Day 2 and 2008 for Day 4) [00:27:12.02] [00:27:18.14] Corinne: Can you draw that on the board for me.
Corinne is trying to get the students to think about when they can draw (geometrically) vectors involving complex numbers.
[00:30:32.09]{Humor}:Reflection2: Another reflection is that I comment that this student 'lucked out' which was a small attempt at humor. Several students laugh and Sam in particular is caught on camera smiling at least. Students wouldn't have understood the comment and laughed if they hadn't gotten the point of the discussion.
If you can get a student to make an ah ha moment and you can make a joke about it,
KB: everything that leads up to an ah ha moment, there is an anxiety associated with that, if you relieve that tension, it's easier for them to go through the steps leading up to the ah ha moments. Laughter diffuses anxiety, that was very common in west africa, laughter was used to diffuse anxiety.
West africa, classic (these comments from Kerry are probably on tape from summer 2009)
