Some initial thoughts that will be fleshed out later using the exploring the woods/park analogy.
knowing the territory well and make sure you know the boundaries on what you are willing for them to explore
knowing what you want to see in the territory - what the highlights are
being willing to take any path through the territory
connecting those different paths to hit all the highlights
understand how to get from what student's express (active listening and translating) to the highlights
remind them of the tools that they have and give them new tools as they need them
keeping positive
