Started with motivation: why the course is fun, what will be difficult, and suggestions for being successful in it – emphasized from day one that we are focusing on sense-making and that things in the course WILL make sense, and we’ll do so via in-depth look at an exemplar experiment
Difficulties: new notation and language, math, challenging ideas
Tell them up front what they are expected to be able to do – show them the fundamental problems (included in the text) as a resource
Introduce the idea of postulate – what does it mean for something to be a postulate?
